Despite the weather; a chaotic mix of sun, wind and at times torrential rain, the crowds braved the elements and provided amazing support to the competitors throughout the weekend.

A Friday evening of family games in the marquee set the tone for what was to come. A competitive atmosphere soon developed during the potato rolling, with Moira (Sea Fret) sweeping in at the last minute to steal the prize and show all the men how to do it.

Saturday kicked off with registration for the weekend boat handling and skills based competitions in the pool. Throughout the day spectators perused the tables of exhibitors and stalls including

Crafty Betty soft furnishings for boats;

Vintage Assortment of sweets and handmade fudge

as well as Happy Cakes homemade gluten and dairy free cakes.(https://www.facebook.com/happycakesnewarkontrent/)

The Club's long standing favourite exhibitors provided expert advice to all from the Dogs Trust

and the RNLI

both receiving fantastic support from all with generous levels of donations made throughout the weekend.

With the weather holding, boat handling competitions commenced, only interrupted by the thunderous engine noise from the fly over by a Lancaster Bomber. Not once but twice the crowd were treated to a close encounter of this magnificent bomber.

Saturday evening provided boaters the opportunity to share stories about their boating season followed by throwing some shapes on the dance floor to the music of the The Splinter Band.

A cold bitter wind and some very angry looking clouds welcomed the competitors and spectators on the Sunday morning. The last of the boat handling competitions concluded in the torrential rain.

A break in the weather and the sun returning briefly prompted the pool competitions to get underway while those that weren't so brave to venture out took cover in the marquee and visited the exhibitors.

As the wind began to pickup through Sunday, the decision to cancel the Commodore Cruise was made due to safety reasons and the Grand Duck Race was moved into the marquee. A big thank you to all the exhibitors and club members who donated some fantastic prizes.

The ticket drawing of the Grand Duck Race was swiftly followed by the prize giving for the boat handling competitions and the competitions that took place in the pool.

The committee would like to thank the judges for providing their time and expertise throughout the weekend standing in wind, rain and on occassions sunshine; the ladies from the committee who manned the raffle and tombola stall throughout the weekend, Sallie Roberts for manning the Membership stand and Richard Schuster for spending a cold day in the Safty Boat; and Graham & Alison off Double Bubble for supplying the banners.

The committee is asking members to provide feedback via either the clubs website, Facebook Group or on email for the coming boating season 2018. Suggests wanted regarding activities and events that members would like to participate in throughout the year, with specific details and examples would help in the planning of suggested events.

Don't forget, the AGM meeting and the Laying up Supper on November 18th, 2017. See the clubs website for further information: www.farndonboatclub.co.uk
